Lockhart River is a remote community, accessible from Cairns by road (12 hours drive) or a daily passenger air service (90 minutes).

Basic services and facilities including a 24-hour health centre, full-time police service, new retail store, library, sports oval, youth program, playgroup, child care, kindergarten, prep and primary schooling are available in Lockhart River.
